What happens during my chiropractor visit?

Your first appointment with a chiropractor will usually last between 30 and 60 minutes and you will be asked about your treatment goals, health history, and physical problems you may have that makes it hard for you to do certain things. It is important to let your chiropractor know if you have any numbness, tingling, weakness, or any other nerve problems. You will also be asked about past injuries and illnesses, current health problems and medications, lifestyle, diet, sleep habits, exercise, mental stresses, and use of alcohol, drugs, or tobacco.

Physical exam

After asking about health, the chiropractor will do a physical exam that may include testing how well your spine moves. Dr. Weaver or staff will also check your blood pressure and take X-rays if necessary to look for problems that could be adding to your neck or back pain.

Treatment

Treatments usually begin on the first or second visit where you may be asked to lie on a special table. During these sessions the chiropractor does spinal manipulations by moving joints in your spine to the end of their range, followed by a light thrust. Other treatments may follow such as electric muscle stimulation, therapeutic ultrasound or phototherapy and other work on soft tissues.

After the appointment

Some people may report being achy, stiff, or tired for a few days after a spinal manipulation as their body is adjusting to the new alignment. You should not feel pain from the manipulation. You may need to return for sessions for several weeks. These subsequent sessions would be shorter at 10 to 20 minutes.
